DLR - Institute of Communication and Navigation

The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) is Germany’s aerospace research centre and space agency.

The project will involve the Optical Communications Group (OCG) of Digital Networks section within the Institute of Communications and Navigation.

The activities of OCG are dedicated to scientific research in the field of optical free space communication technology.

Research topics are simulation of atmospheric propagation channels (channel model), phase synchronisation of Lasers for coherent BPSK systems, testing and measurement of various reception technologies as well as pointing acquisition and tracking aspects.

The institute has collaborated in several national and international projects in this filed like SOLACOS (Solid State Laser Communication in Space), DLR-LCT (Laser Communication Terminal, optimisation of the high data-rate optical PSK system), and STRATOS (ESA definition Study for a future European HAP system, optical inter-platform links on HAPs).

The German Aerospace Centre will contribute its know-how in optical backhaul links.

DLR’s work will result in an optical HAP payload and ground equipment to perform channel measurements on a high-speed optical downlink.
