The University of York was a main player in the HeliNet project, where it specialised in the broadband communications application.

The Communications and Physical Layer Research Groups now have a large team of 11 people specialising in HAP based communications with an international reputation.

Other work in the group is focused on terrestrial and satellite applications, particularly signal processing, including MIMO systems.

As a result of HeliNet the University has founded a spin-off company SkyLARC Technologies Ltd, which has links with a number of HAP projects worldwide.

The group is also a partner in the FP5 FLOWS project (IST-2001-32125) dealing with flexible convergence of wireless standards and services, including multi-band antenna array design.

The team at York will contribute to the cutting edge research on the broadband service provision to high-speed vehicles. They will lead the development of the communications nodes, and have a specific interest in the mm-wave and RF front end, as well as steerable antenna technology.

David Grace, the projects Principal Scientific Officer, leads the University of York team.
